In junior high, I had 2 nicknames: Shamu and Sumo.(You can see my “before photos” if you go to the post for Tuesday, Mar 11, 2008) My parents encouraged me to lose weight and I got my first gym membership when I was 15 years old. I discovered that exercise made me feel great and it, along with nutrition, became a passion. My first job teaching exercise was in 1995 and in 2003 I became certified as a personal trainer.

All my experience was with the mainstream, body-building style workouts, kickboxing and martial arts. I was a diehard, 2-hours-a-day-5-days-a-week kind of workout girl; an hour of cardio and another hour of lifting weights. Once I was introduced to Crossfit, my whole philosophy, and physique, changed. I could see a huge difference in a short amount of time. I’m now leaner, faster, stronger, more agile, happier, more energetic and more excited about fitness than ever before.

I started coaching CrossFit in 2007 and am a Level 1 Certified CrossFit trainer as well as a Level I CrossFit Running & Endurance Certified. I have truly been excited and inspired by the transformations I am seeing in people. I am amazed at the huge impact Crossfit has on peoples’ lives and my life. My clients regularly express to me that the Crossfit mentality carries over into their home and work life as well. They are able to stare down adversity and dig their heels in, and when things get tough they take a deep breath and get back in the fight.

I’m 35 now and own my own gym. I love what I do and love getting to play a part in people changing their own lives! I’m regularly silly-actin’ and also laugh at my own jokes. Harassment is a specialty of mine… don’t even think about missing a workout!

I started CrossFit in 2008 when CFED opened its doors. I entered as a reasonably talented athlete (at least I thought so), at 155# (my weight for the past 10 years), and no real desire to make any progress. To put it bluntly, I was happy with where I was and who I was. I quickly came to find out that CrossFit East Decatur is no place for an ego and I was routinely humbled by all of the incredible athletes that frequent the gym.

My desire to become a CrossFitter was sparked at the 2009 CrossFit Games South East Regionals when I witnessed what true dedication to training can accomplish. The caliber of athlete I saw even at the regional stage was awe inspiring and I knew that I wanted to accomplish the same feats of speed, strength, and agility. The next Monday I returned from the Regional competition and set out on a “3 on/1 off” training schedule.

A few years later and several Paleo challenges under my belt, I’ve added 20 pounds to my frame, I’ve competed in local competitions as well as the 2010 CrossFit Games South East Regionals, and I’m still humbled by all of the great athletes that come to our gym.

There hasn’t been much deviation from my affiliation with health and fitness. From gymnastics to soccer, I’ve maintained a constant relationship with exercise for the past 30 years. I’ve been through the ringers of fitness including personal training, strength and conditioning, and group fitness.
I was raised Stone Mountain and moved back to GA in 2009 after 10 years in The Capital City. In 2007, while in Washington, I asked a coworker if he knew of anywhere in the DC area that offered “extreme fitness”. After being referred to and watching some YouTube videos (including tires, ropes, and chains) I replied to said coworker (and myself) “That will never be me. That’s a little too extreme”. I received my Level 1 Certification in February 2010 and haven’t looked back.
Two years later in early 2012, by the Devine alignment of the stars, I found my way to Crossfit East Decatur. I can simply say that CFED has changed everything for me. The owners, coaches, and most importantly the community have become some of the most important people in my life. CFED has changed my outlook towards my future, my health and reignited my passion for helping others.
With one of the most knowledgeable and arguably the best staffs in Georgia, coming to CFED to Coach is as much of an honor as WODing with them. How many people can say that they know and WOD with a FOUR-TIME Games competitor??! I can’t imagine walking into another box everyday and I’m sure after you visit you’ll feel the same way!
You’ll probably hear me before you see me at CFED! I’ll be the one lifting and throwing heavy weights with a long-sleeved shirt on!!

I found Crossfit two and a half years ago when I moved down to Orlando, Florida not knowing a soul. A friend thought I would love the work outs and hopefully make some friends. Within a few weeks I felt like I was family AND I was addicted to the work outs. I played team sports throughout high school and college and thought of myself as fit, but at 30 years old I am able to say I am the strongest, healthiest, and most confident I have been in my entire life.

As a Crossfitter I love to talk about overhead squats, how to eat healthy, and what color my next pair of lifting shoes are going to be but first thing that always comes to mind when talking about Crossfit is the community. Crossfit East Decatur is a gym where everyone knows your name, people cheer you on, and you are missed on your rest days. I enjoy being a coach at CFED helping people reach their goals and being a motivator but most of all I love being a member of the CFED community.

The first time I stepped in to a gym, I was 14 years old, less than 100 pounds, and tired of having sand kicked in my face.  I immediately enjoyed the exercise and saw the results.  Fast forward twenty-something years to when a friend casually directed me to the CrossFit website.  All over again, I was hooked.  This time; however, it was for the competitive drive to improve myself and sheer overall fitness.

I’ve spent much of my adult life focusing on kids and on exercise.  While teaching at Decatur High School for 10 years, I also head coached their wrestling team. I built strong ties to my wrestlers and saw the effects that hard work, discipline and athletics put in their lives.  After I stopped teaching, I coached a kids’ wrestling club out of Lakeside High School and had a lot of fun with this for over six years.

Eventually, I put two of my favorite things together and got my CrossFit Kids Certification.  I’m excited to be teaching this incredible sport to the CFED brood and look forward to forging future fitness.
